Simpler Recycling changes the minimum household recycling services that waste collectors must provide in England. It aims to make core collections more consistent, although bin colours and local collection systems can still differ.

What households should be able to recycle
The required streams include food and garden waste; paper and card; and glass, metal and plastic, including cartons. Councils can choose suitable containers and may collect some dry materials together.
Food waste collections
Weekly household food-waste collection is the default requirement in England from 31 March 2026, although certain authorities have a later date under transitional arrangements. Garden-waste collection can remain an optional charged service.
Plastic bags and film
Plastic film packaging and plastic bags are scheduled to join household plastic recycling from 31 March 2027. Until your council confirms that service, use its existing rules or an appropriate retailer collection point.
Why local checks still matter
The reforms do not make every bin colour or collection day identical. Councils must tell residents what belongs in each container, so use address-specific instructions before changing what you put out.
