Household recycling centres—often called tips—accept many materials that cannot go in normal kerbside bins. The responsible authority may be a county, unitary or other council, and every site has its own operating rules.

Check the site rules first
Opening hours can change seasonally and some centres require timed bookings. Councils may restrict vans, trailers, hire vehicles or visits from outside the authority area.
Check whether proof of address, a permit or vehicle registration is required. Do not assume the nearest geographical site accepts residents from your council.
Sort and transport waste safely
Separate cardboard, metals, electricals, batteries, wood, garden waste and other materials before leaving home. Secure the load so nothing can fall from the vehicle.
Keep hazardous items in their original containers where possible and never mix chemicals. Ask the council for advice before taking asbestos, gas cylinders, fuel, paint or damaged batteries.
Household and trade waste
Household sites may reject business or trade waste, including material produced as part of paid work. DIY-waste rules and charges also vary.
Follow staff directions, supervise children and pets, and do not remove items from containers unless the site operates an authorised reuse area.
