The coating, not the receipt’s small size alone, is the main recycling concern.

Why the paper stream may reject it

Paper recycling mixes many sources into pulp. Chemicals from thermal coatings can migrate into the recycled fibre and undermine efforts to produce cleaner new paper. Policies vary as formulations change, but many UK councils explicitly exclude receipts. Follow the local list rather than relying on a generic recycling symbol or the word paper.

Handle receipts sensibly

Keep a receipt only as long as it is needed for a return, warranty, tax record or expense claim. Store important examples flat and photograph or scan them because thermal print can fade.
